Personal questions for Oedipus

1.  I wonder how Oedipus's fate will impact the other members of his family?  Don't you?  I mean we know how the fate of his mother/wife ended.  I wonder how his daughters and sons felt about the whole ordeal?
Did they feel ashamed or embarrassed of their parents actions, etc?

2.  If Oedipus's parents would not have given him up or tried to kill him do you think his prophecy/fate would have been fulfiflled?

3.  Do you think Oedipus should have sought the truth of his true identity?

4.  Did you notice Oedipus's attitude at the beginning of the play versus the end of the play?  Why do you think this changed?

  1. In the beginning of the play Oedipus was arrogant, trying to protect his imagine as King. I feel he knew he was the killer of King Laius, it showed in his actions and words. In the end of the play, he also found out about his true identity and was shameful, and "less of a man" for marrying his own mother and bearing children. I think in his mind, it was more detrimental to Oedipus, that he killed his own father, then marrying his mother.

  2. I wondered the same!!! I wondered what his children really thought because you don't hear from them. I think I would be embarrassed if they were my parents especially when everyone found out. I never thought about Oedipus trying to find out his true identity but did he really have reason to??? He was convinced of who his parents were. What a sad story that he was dammed from the start.

  3. Yes! Especially the daughters. It was really sad when he had mentioned that no men would want them since they were born of incest. Those poor girls! How weird to realize that your father is your brother and not only that but your parents were daft enough to want to kill their child because of some prophecy. It's horrible how their fate too has been sealed because of Oedipus' prophecy.

  4. I think it was his human nature to know his identiy. The saying is true here to. Somethings are better left unsaid.

  5. I think even if Oedipus' parents didn't give him away in the beginning, his destiny would've still remained the same but only in a different way. The parents tried to avoid the prophecy by giving him away at birth, but he still managed to follow through. Even if they kept Oedipus, there will be other ways in which he ends up killing his father and marrying his mother. It's fate.
